Introduction
Visual Perception Disorder, also known as, visual processing disorder (VPD) affects how the brain processes and recognized visual information. Like most sensory processing disorders, VPD can be a lifelong challenge, often times requiring students to find ways to cope and seek help with their learning. VPD is often untreated due to the misdiagnosis of the disorder. It is possible for a student to have difficulty in the processing of visual information, but still be able to see clearly the information. The ability to see clearly is not the disorder; rather the ability to interpret and recognize the information becomes the challenge. Students with VPD may have difficulty reading in school, but there are ways to aid children with VPD. This website will contain information about ways students and parents can supplement the learning at school.
Many sources about VPD can be found online, mainly because it is placed under the umbrella of sensory processing disorder. Articles online like, Education.com’s article " Could my Kindergartener have Sensory Processing Disorder?” touches a common question that families of young students may have about VPD, or any type of sensory learning disorder. Other websites like, Teachertube.com and Youtube.com both contain videos that help parents and kids understand what visual processing disorder is. The link for Teachertube.com contains an overview of sensory processing disorder, but at the 2:08 min mark, they address VPD. Just like Teachertube.com, Youtube also contain videos that address Visual processing disorder. Many resources can be found throughout this website to aid in helping families and kids cope with VPD.
